Thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are expected across several areas in Sarawak and Sabah until 5pm today, according to a weather warning issued on Thursday (April 2, 2026).
In Sarawak, the affected areas include Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri (Telang Usan and Marudi), and Limbang.
In Sabah, the warning covers the west coast districts of Papar, Putatan, Penampang and Kota Kinabalu, as well as Sandakan, Telupid, Kinabatangan, Beluran and Sandakan.
The Meteorological Department said the alert was issued following indications of thunderstorms producing rainfall exceeding 20mm per hour, which are expected to persist for more than an hour in affected areas.
It added that thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts, typically valid for no more than six hours per issuance.
The advisory was issued at 1.50pm on Thursday and remains in effect until 5pm the same day.
