A supermarket worker at Waitrose has been dismissed after intervening in a shoplifting incident, ending his 17-year career with the company.
According to NDTV, citing the Metro, the 54-year-old employee, Walker Smith, said the incident occurred at the Clapham Junction branch when a customer alerted staff about a man allegedly filling a bag with Easter chocolates.
Smith, who recognised the suspect as a repeat offender, attempted to seize the bag containing the stolen items.
A brief struggle reportedly broke out as the suspect tried to retrieve the bag, causing it to tear and chocolates to spill onto the floor before the individual fled the scene.
Smith admitted he threw pieces of chocolate in frustration but insisted they were not aimed at anyone.
He said he had previously been warned not to confront shoplifters directly, but increasing theft cases and limited security staff pushed him to act.
Days after the incident, Smith was called into a meeting and informed that his employment had been terminated, despite his apology and long service, which he described as feeling like a “family.”
The decision has left him worried about his financial situation, including his ability to pay rent after recently moving into a new home.
The case highlights growing concerns over retail crime in the United Kingdom, where more than 500,000 theft incidents were reported in England and Wales over the past year.
Waitrose, in a statement, said its policies are designed to protect staff and customer safety, and employees are required not to put themselves in potentially dangerous situations.
