Government To Suspend Fleet Cards Over Diesel Subsidy Abuse Under SKDS

Date:

The government will take firm action, including suspending and revoking fleet card approvals under the Subsidised Diesel Control Scheme (SKDS), if any misuse is detected.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the decision was made during a follow-up meeting of the Anti-Misappropriation Enforcement Action Committee (JTPAB) to strengthen oversight of subsidised fuel distribution.

He explained that key measures include appointing lead agencies by sector, with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) overseeing land operations, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) handling border enforcement under the Home Ministry, and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) managing maritime areas.

The government has also agreed to tighten monitoring of bunkering activities and establish special task forces in Sabah, Sarawak and the Federal Territory of Labuan to curb leakages and abuse.

According to Fadillah, these task forces will be jointly chaired by Federal Secretaries and State Secretaries, with state-level KPDN offices acting as secretariats and coordinating with all relevant enforcement agencies.

In addition, the SKDS initiative will be expanded through the use of special fleet cards for the goods transportation sector in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan to improve tracking and accountability.

General policy observers note that stricter enforcement and targeted monitoring are essential in ensuring subsidy schemes benefit the intended groups while preventing systemic abuse.

Fadillah added that strategic proposals will be presented periodically to the National Economic Action Council to safeguard national supply stability, especially amid ongoing global uncertainties.

He stressed that while geopolitical tensions in West Asia may impact global supply chains and energy prices, the government has strengthened preparedness measures to ensure domestic fuel supply remains stable and well-managed.
