India is reportedly exploring the use of snakes and crocodiles along parts of its border with Bangladesh as a measure to prevent unauthorised crossings, according to the Border Security Force (BSF).
Senior BSF officer Manoj Barnwal told AFP that the proposal was discussed during a February meeting with the Home Ministry, where officials examined the feasibility of deploying reptiles in high-risk riverine areas.
He said the idea focuses on using natural deterrents such as crocodiles and snakes in flood-prone zones, particularly in unfenced stretches where conventional border fencing is not possible or effective.
Barnwal, who serves as deputy inspector general of the paramilitary force based in Kolkata, noted that the concept is still under review and has not yet been implemented.
He also acknowledged potential challenges, including how the reptiles would be sourced and what impact such a measure could have on communities living along the border.
Field units have reportedly been tasked with studying the proposal and submitting detailed assessments on its practicality and safety concerns.
The India-Bangladesh border spans more than 4,000 kilometres and cuts through complex terrain, including the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest.
Much of the frontier remains unfenced, especially in riverine and delta regions where traditional security infrastructure is difficult to maintain.
Tensions over border control and migration have remained a sensitive issue, particularly following political changes in Bangladesh in 2024 that strained diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Dhaka.
India has previously strengthened fencing and increased enforcement actions along the border, with authorities detaining individuals attempting to cross illegally in recent years.
Officials in New Delhi have also maintained a strict stance on illegal immigration, although rights groups have raised concerns over treatment of migrants and due process in border enforcement operations.
