A man with more than 10 prior criminal records was shot by police after allegedly attempting to attack officers with a machete in front of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Machang in Kelantan last night.
The suspect, believed to be in his 30s, sustained a gunshot wound to his right thigh and is currently receiving treatment at Machang Hospital.
According to sources, the incident occurred at about 10.45pm when a police patrol team spotted two men on a motorcycle stopping near an ATM machine outside UiTM Machang.
The pillion rider reportedly went to the bank area, and when officers approached him for a routine check, he refused to cooperate.
The suspect then allegedly pulled out a machete from his bag and attempted to attack the officers.
Police said an officer first fired a warning shot into the air, but the suspect continued to advance despite the command.
In response, officers fired a shot that struck the suspect in the thigh.
The man then attempted to flee by jumping into a nearby drain, but was later arrested shortly after and sent to hospital for further treatment.
Authorities said the suspect had more than 10 previous criminal records, including drug-related offences.
He is also believed to have been involved in a robbery at a 7-Eleven outlet in Machang during the Hari Raya period.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat is expected to issue a statement on the incident soon.
