Police are currently tracking down a man known as “Ucuk” who is suspected of being involved in an incident involving religious inscriptions at a temple in Jalan Jeti Anjung Batu–Pantai Siring, Serkam, Jasin, last night.
Jasin District Police Chief Superintendent Lee Robert said initial information from villagers suggested that the 38-year-old man had previously carried out similar acts in several locations around the area.
He said the suspect is believed to be mentally unwell and is a former tahfiz student, and had earlier been linked to similar writings on roadside walls and electric poles.
Police have not ruled out the possibility that the same individual is responsible for the latest incident at the temple.
Authorities also advised the public not to spread speculation or unverified information regarding the case.
The incident came to light around 11pm after police received a tip-off from the public, including a fisherman who discovered the markings.
Upon inspection, officers found inscriptions of “Allah” and “Bismillahirrahmanirrahim” painted in white on the temple wall.
Initial investigations also found that the ownership status of the temple and land has yet to be confirmed.
Further checks are being carried out with the Jasin District and Land Office to determine the legal status of the property.
The case is being investigated under Sections 295, 298, and 427 of the Penal Code for defiling a place of worship, wounding religious feelings, and committing mischief to property.
Members of the public with information are urged to contact investigating officer Inspector Mohd Hafiz Othman at 017-3178434 or visit the nearest police station.
