The government is encouraging Malaysians to adopt the Time-of-Use (ToU) electricity tariff scheme as part of efforts to reduce household bills and improve national energy efficiency amid fluctuating global energy prices.
In a statement, the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry said 128,868 consumers had already switched to the ToU scheme as of February, reflecting increasing awareness of smarter energy consumption practices.
The ministry explained that the scheme offers cheaper electricity rates during off-peak hours and higher charges during peak periods, giving consumers an incentive to adjust their daily usage patterns.
Peak hours are set between 2pm and 10pm on weekdays, when demand and tariffs are higher, while off-peak periods include overnight hours, early mornings, weekends and public holidays, when rates are lower.
Consumers are advised to shift high-energy activities such as air-conditioning, laundry, water heating and electric vehicle charging to off-peak periods to maximise cost savings.
The ministry said the initiative not only helps reduce electricity bills but also promotes more efficient and sustainable energy consumption nationwide.
It added that the expansion of the scheme will be accelerated in line with the Malaysia Madani vision, which emphasises public well-being, sustainability and effective governance.
“Using energy wisely reduces the cost of living, protects the environment and ensures balanced national development for future generations,” the ministry said.
