A 48-year-old unemployed man was fined RM3,500 by the Magistrates’ Court here today after pleading guilty to throwing a plastic chair at his wife, causing her injury in an incident last week.

The accused, Mohd. Hairi Majid, entered his guilty plea after the charge was read before Magistrate Nur Afiqah Radhiah Zainurin.

According to the charge, he was accused of intentionally causing harm to his 41-year-old wife by striking her with a plastic chair at about 2pm on March 3. The offence took place at a house in Taman Pengkalan Minyak Damai.

The charge, framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code, carries a penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, or a fine, or whipping, or any combination of two of these punishments upon conviction.

Facts of the case revealed that the incident stemmed from a verbal argument between the couple after the victim scolded their child, who is a person with disabilities (OKU) with Down syndrome, while preparing and bathing him.

The court was told that the accused then threw a small plastic chair towards his wife, causing her to suffer soft tissue injuries and swelling to her head.

The court imposed a fine of RM3,500, with a three-month jail term in default of payment.
