Health Experts Warn Against Plucking Nose Hair Due To Serious Infection Risk

Date:

Pulling out nose hair with tweezers may pose serious health risks if done improperly, according to a public health awareness advisory.

A recent explanation shared by Public Health Malaysia warns that the habit should be avoided as it involves a sensitive facial area known as the “Triangle of Death.” This region covers the area from the bridge of the nose between the eyes down to the corners of the upper lip.

Medical experts explain that the blood vessels in this area are directly connected to the cavernous sinus, a cavity located near the base of the brain.

From a medical perspective, forcefully plucking nose hair can pull out the root and leave behind microscopic wounds in the nasal lining.

These small injuries can become an entry point for bacteria, as the nasal cavity naturally contains germs, dust, and microorganisms filtered from the air.

If bacteria infect the damaged follicle, it may lead to internal nasal boils. In more severe cases, the infection can spread through the bloodstream in the “Triangle of Death” area and reach the brain.

This can result in serious complications such as meningitis, brain abscess, vision problems leading to blindness, coma, and in rare cases, death.

Although fatalities are uncommon, health experts stress that the risk should not be ignored.

The public is therefore advised to avoid plucking nose hair and instead use safer grooming methods, including trimming with small rounded scissors or using electric nose hair trimmers.

Waxing or completely removing nose hair is also discouraged due to the increased risk of infection.

Experts also remind that nose hair plays an important role in filtering dust and harmful particles from entering the respiratory system, and should not be removed entirely for cosmetic reasons.
