NYC Subway Machete Attack Leaves Three Injured, Suspect Shot Dead By Police

Date:

A man was fatally shot by police after allegedly attacking three people with a machete at New York’s Grand Central subway station on the morning of April 11, authorities said.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the incident began shortly after 9.30am when the suspect, who had reportedly been behaving erratically on a subway train, exited at the Grand Central-42 Street Station and began slashing victims on the platform.

Police said officers responded to the scene and repeatedly ordered the man to drop the weapon, but he refused to comply. One officer then opened fire, fatally striking him.

The three victims—two men aged 84 and 65, and a 70-year-old woman—were taken to Bellevue Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition with injuries expected to be non-life-threatening.

The attacker was also transported to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Two police officers were treated for noise exposure following the incident.

Officials said there is currently no indication the attack was terrorism-related, and investigations are ongoing.

In a statement, Mamdani praised the rapid response of law enforcement and confirmed that an internal police review is underway, with body camera footage to be released as part of standard procedure.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the incident as a “senseless act of violence” and pledged efforts to ensure commuter safety across the city’s transit system.

The attack caused significant disruption to subway services, with several train lines diverted while police secured the station and carried out investigations.

Authorities have since reopened parts of the station, though a heavy police presence remains in place as inquiries continue.
