A Form One student was killed while her friend was left seriously injured after both were struck by a car in front of a surau at SMK Tanjong Mas on Sunday afternoon.
The tragic incident, which occurred at around 1.50pm, saw the two victims reportedly standing outside the surau to put on their shoes when they were suddenly hit by the vehicle.
Kota Bharu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azmir Damiri, said authorities received a report on the incident at approximately 2.15pm before launching an immediate investigation.
Preliminary findings suggest that the car, driven by a woman within the school compound, is believed to have accelerated unintentionally after the driver reportedly pressed the accelerator pedal, causing the vehicle to lose control. The car then veered forward, hitting the two students before crashing into a stone pillar at the surau.
One of the victims, 13-year-old Nur Fatimatul Hawa Mohd Azaudin, suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was later taken to the forensic unit at Hospital Pakar Universiti Sains Malaysia in Kubang Kerian for a post-mortem.
The second victim sustained serious bodily injuries and is currently receiving treatment in the red zone at Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II.
Police confirmed that the driver was unhurt. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, and members of the public with information have been urged to contact the Kota Bharu District Police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division or call 09-7752315 to assist with investigations.
