Apple Plans Smart Glasses With Multiple Frame Styles To Challenge Meta

Date:

Apple is reportedly working on a new generation of artificial intelligence-powered smart glasses that will come in multiple frame designs and feature an advanced camera system, according to a Bloomberg report.

The device is expected to be part of Apple’s broader push into AI-driven wearables and is designed to compete directly with products such as Meta Platforms’s Ray-Ban smart glasses.

According to the report, Apple is developing several styles of frames, including rectangular and oval designs, with some models inspired by classic eyewear shapes. The company is also experimenting with different colour finishes and premium materials as it seeks to position the product as a high-end wearable.

Unlike fully augmented reality headsets, the upcoming smart glasses are expected to function without a built-in display. Instead, they will focus on everyday functions such as photo and video capture, phone calls, music playback, notifications and hands-free interaction through voice commands powered by an upgraded version of Siri.

The glasses are expected to integrate closely with the iPhone ecosystem, allowing users to sync content for editing and sharing. Apple is also reportedly developing a redesigned camera system featuring vertically aligned oval lenses and indicator lights, setting it apart from competitors.

The product, internally codenamed N50, is expected to be unveiled as early as late 2026 or early 2027, with full commercial release likely following shortly after.

The development forms part of Apple’s wider strategy to expand its AI hardware lineup, which also includes new AirPods and other wearable devices designed to better understand user environments through computer vision technology.

Meanwhile, Apple is also said to be progressing with its long-rumoured foldable iPhone, which remains on track for a potential launch around September, despite earlier concerns about production delays.

The report also noted ongoing internal changes within Apple’s artificial intelligence division, including the departure of former AI chief John Giannandrea, as the company continues to restructure its AI leadership and strategy.
