Man Arrested After Cigarettes Hidden In Bread Found At Checkpoint

Date:

A Malaysian man was arrested on April 7 after authorities discovered duty-unpaid cigarettes concealed inside a loaf of bread at Woodlands Checkpoint.

In a Facebook post on April 14, Singapore’s Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said the 49-year-old suspect was attempting to enter Singapore on a Malaysia-registered motorcycle when he was directed for further inspection by officers.

During the checks, officers noticed a loaf of bread placed in the motorcycle’s centre basket, which raised suspicion.

A closer inspection revealed multiple packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden within the bread. In total, eight packets were recovered, cleverly concealed between individual slices.

The man was subsequently arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle contraband into the country. The case has since been handed over to Singapore Customs for further investigation.

ICA reiterated that safeguarding border security remains a key priority, particularly in tackling the smuggling of prohibited and undeclared goods.

Under Singapore’s Customs Act and Goods and Services Tax (GST) Act, offences involving duty-unpaid cigarettes — including possession, transport, and sale — carry severe penalties.

Convicted offenders may face fines of up to 40 times the amount of tax evaded, imprisonment of up to six years, or both.

Authorities also noted a rising trend in smuggling attempts. In its 2025 annual statistics, ICA reported 57,400 contraband cases last year, marking a 30.6 per cent increase compared to 43,900 cases in 2024.

Many of these cases involved cigarettes hidden in modified vehicle compartments or concealed among other goods in lorries, highlighting increasingly creative smuggling tactics.
