A 42-year-old woman was sentenced by the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Court to one day in jail and fined RM13,000 after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol and running a red light, which resulted in a road accident at the Jalan Genting Klang traffic light junction yesterday.
The court also ordered that she be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for two years. In addition, she will serve a further six months in jail if she fails to pay the fine.
Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief, ACP Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, said the conviction was made under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The incident occurred at around 8.22pm and involved a BMW X1 driven by the woman and a Yamaha LC135 motorcycle ridden by a 22-year-old man with a 15-year-old female pillion passenger.
According to initial investigations, the woman allegedly failed to stop at a red light and collided with the motorcycle, which had the right of way on a green signal.
The motorcyclist sustained minor injuries, including swelling on his right knee, while the pillion rider and the driver of the car were not injured.
Police confirmed that a breathalyser test showed the woman had an alcohol level of 183 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.
Following the incident, police opened an investigation under Section 45A(1) of the same Act, and the accused later pleaded guilty in court. Authorities also said investigations are continuing under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Members of the public with information related to the case are urged to contact the Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station or any nearby police station to assist in the investigation.
