MACC Recovers RM31.3 Billion, Records One Of World’s Highest Recovery Rates In 1MDB Case

Date:

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has successfully recovered RM31.3 billion, or 74.5 per cent, of the RM42 billion misappropriated from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), marking one of the highest asset recovery rates recorded globally for a major financial crime case.

Azam Baki said the recovered amount has surpassed earlier estimates of around 70 per cent, or RM30 billion, reflecting stronger-than-expected progress in asset recovery efforts.

He said the total amount of misappropriated 1MDB funds is estimated at RM42 billion, with RM31.3 billion recovered as of 2025, representing 74.5 per cent of the total. He added that internationally, a recovery rate above 60 to 70 per cent is already considered exceptional for large-scale financial crimes.

Among the recovered assets were proceeds from the sale of luxury yacht Equanimity, valued at approximately RM543 million, as well as the return of a private jet and several overseas properties linked to the scandal.

Malaysia also reached global settlements with several international institutions, including Goldman Sachs, IPIC, Aabar, as well as audit firms Deloitte and KPMG, contributing billions of ringgit in recovery funds.

Authorities further credited cooperation with the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and multiple international jurisdictions, including Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Singapore, through mechanisms such as Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) and cross-border asset forfeiture actions.

The MACC said it remains committed to tracking and recovering all remaining misappropriated assets, regardless of location or time required, stressing that the effort is aimed at restoring public funds and strengthening trust in national institutions.
