Man Charged For Brutal Assault On Wife Using Chair, Pipes And Metal Rod

Date:

A 43-year-old man was charged at the Sessions Court here on Wednesday for allegedly causing grievous hurt to his wife by assaulting her with multiple objects on two separate occasions in March and April.

The accused, Rosmaini Abdul Raof, pleaded not guilty and requested a full trial after the charges were read before Judge Najwa Che Mat.

According to the charge sheet, he is accused of intentionally causing serious injuries to his 39-year-old wife, Nurfitri Moktar, by hitting her with a plastic chair and a water hose at a house in Bandar Amanjaya at about 5pm on March 29.

He is also accused of committing a similar offence against the same victim using a metal curtain rod at the same location at about 9am on April 23.

The offences fall under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment, as well as fines or whipping upon conviction.

Prosecution was led by Kedah State Director of Prosecution Khairul Anuar Abdul Halim, while the accused was represented by legal aid counsel Ruzanna Abdul Rahim from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

The court was informed that although the case was bailable, bail could not be granted as the accused is currently serving a sentence at Kajang Prison.

However, the defence requested the court’s discretion in granting bail, stating that the accused is a father of 11 children, including seven who are still in school, and has two wives to support.

The court ruled that bail could not be granted due to his current imprisonment and set June 16 for the next mention for document submission.

Earlier reports stated that the victim, a 39-year-old civil servant, suffered severe injuries after being repeatedly assaulted, which also led to a miscarriage when she was 12 weeks pregnant.

Police confirmed that the suspect was arrested in the Alor Setar area after fleeing the scene, and that he was also previously convicted in a similar domestic violence case in Johor Bahru in 2021.
