A third-year undergraduate student from a public university in Kota Samarahan has been arrested for allegedly possessing and accessing child and adult pornographic materials.
Kota Samarahan acting police chief Barry William said the 21-year-old suspect was detained during an Ops Pedo raid carried out by the Malaysia Internet Crime Against Children Investigation Unit (Micac) D11 of the Sarawak Police Contingent Headquarters.
The arrest took place at around 2.40pm on Wednesday at the university’s residential college.
According to Barry, police conducted inspections on the suspect’s mobile phone and laptop, which were voluntarily handed over during the operation.
Initial checks allegedly found that the devices contained child and adult pornographic materials.
“The suspect also admitted to being involved in accessing pornographic content since about five years ago and storing the materials in his personal laptop,” he said in a statement.
Police also seized a mobile phone, two SIM cards and a laptop to assist with investigations.
The suspect is currently being held at the Kota Samarahan police lock-up and is expected to be brought before the Kota Samarahan Court for a remand application.
The case is being investigated under Section 10 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and Section 292 of the Penal Code.
Barry added that investigations are still ongoing, including awaiting a digital forensic analysis report before the investigation paper is submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.
