A man allegedly threatened his own family with a knife after failing to get RM5 from his mother to buy cigarettes in an incident at Kampung Haji Matahir, Jalan Merotai Besar, on Wednesday.
The incident reportedly took place at around 7pm when the 30-year-old unemployed local man became enraged after his request for money was rejected.
According to Jasmin Hussin, the suspect’s mother had earlier given him RM2 for the same purpose before the situation escalated.
“However, the suspect became angry and started kicking household furniture while uttering threats,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
The suspect later got into an argument with his younger sibling before tensions worsened when he returned to the house and grabbed a meat cleaver. He then allegedly damaged a motorcycle handle using the weapon.
Fearing for their safety, the suspect’s mother immediately took another child out of the house before lodging a police report at Bombalai Police Station.
Police later acted on the information received and arrested the suspect at around 8.30pm on the same day in front of a house within the village area.
Authorities also seized the meat cleaver believed to have been used during the incident as investigations continue.
Cases involving family disputes and violent outbursts linked to financial demands continue to raise concerns among local communities, especially when they involve threats against immediate family members.
