China Extradites Fraud Suspect from Thailand After $177M Scam Targeting 800+ Victims

Date:

China’s Ministry of Public Security announced on Tuesday that, with strong assistance from the Chinese Embassy in Thailand and relevant Thai law enforcement authorities, a suspect accused of illegally raising public funds has been extradited from Thailand back to China.

According to CCTV, the suspect, surnamed Li, allegedly fabricated claims that his company had strong financial backing, high economic returns, and was about to be listed publicly. Using these false statements, he lured over 800 people with promises of high interest, illegally collecting more than 300 million yuan (about RM177 million). After the scheme was exposed, Li fled abroad.

Following his escape, Chinese authorities launched an international manhunt. In September 2023, the Shangqiu City Procuratorate in Henan approved his arrest, and Interpol issued a red notice last year. Thai authorities apprehended Li in June this year and legally approved his extradition to China.

Officials from China’s Ministry of Public Security described the successful extradition as a testament to the deepening law enforcement and judicial cooperation between China and Thailand, highlighting strengthened bilateral trust. They said it also underscores China’s firm commitment to protecting citizens’ property and upholding the rule of law, while serving as a positive example for future international law enforcement collaboration.
