Nintendo Moves Up Release Date For Live-Action Zelda Movie

Date:

Nintendo has officially moved forward the release date for its upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, bringing the highly anticipated adaptation to cinemas earlier than previously announced.

The film was initially scheduled for release on May 7, 2027, but Nintendo has now confirmed the movie will instead premiere worldwide on April 30, 2027.

The announcement was made by legendary game creator Shigeru Miyamoto through Nintendo’s official social media account.

In the statement, Miyamoto said the production team is continuing to work hard to deliver the movie “as soon as possible”, while confirming the updated release schedule.

The live-action Zelda project marks Nintendo’s first live-action adaptation of one of its major gaming franchises in more than three decades, following the widely criticised 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie.

The company’s renewed confidence in theatrical adaptations comes after the massive global success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and its sequel, which both received strong responses from audiences worldwide.

Unlike the animated Mario films, however, the Zelda movie presents a new challenge for Nintendo as it transitions one of its most iconic fantasy franchises into live-action format.

Reports noted that Nintendo is believed to be taking extra care with the project to ensure the film properly captures the tone, visual style and storytelling elements that fans associate with the beloved game series.

So far, only limited preview material from the movie has been released publicly, including first-look images featuring Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.

Nintendo also confirmed filming is currently underway in a lush natural setting, although further plot details remain under wraps.

Industry observers believe the new April 30 release date may have been strategically selected to coincide with the start of Japan’s Golden Week holiday period, potentially helping maximise box office performance during one of the country’s busiest cinema seasons.
