Wheelchair-Bound Namewee Cleared Of All Drug Charges In PJ Court

Date:

Malaysian singer and filmmaker Namewee has been acquitted of all drug-related charges by the Magistrate’s Court in Petaling Jaya, nearly eight months after the case first emerged.

The artist, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, appeared in court on May 14 for what was expected to be the final hearing involving two charges linked to alleged drug use and drug possession.

The charges stemmed from his arrest at a hotel in Jalan Conlay in October last year.

Previously, Namewee had already been cleared of the drug use charge after pathology test results returned negative.

He had also pleaded not guilty to the separate drug possession charge.

Reports stated that the Attorney General’s Chambers initially rejected the singer’s first representation seeking to withdraw the charges.

However, prosecutors later accepted a second representation submitted by the defence.

During Thursday’s proceedings, Magistrate Khairunnisak Hassni officially granted a discharge and acquittal after receiving confirmation from the prosecution.

Apart from the court outcome, Namewee also attracted attention after arriving at court in a wheelchair.

Through posts shared on social media, the singer explained that he had recently injured his leg before the hearing.

He jokingly remarked that since people would criticise him regardless of whether he stood or sat, he preferred remaining seated because it was “more comfortable”.

Following the court decision, many fans expressed relief and happiness over the acquittal online.

However, reports also noted that Namewee remains listed as a suspect in an ongoing investigation linked to the death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh, with the case still under police investigation.
