A retired police officer was found dead inside his home in Taman Bukit Katil on Sunday after neighbours became suspicious upon detecting a foul smell coming from the residence.
Melaka Tengah police chief Christopher Patit said authorities received information through an emergency MERS999 call at around 6.30pm before a police team was dispatched to the scene.
According to him, the Fire and Rescue Department was later called in to break open the door of the house before officers discovered the 64-year-old man lying face down in the living room.
“Initial examinations conducted by the investigating officer and personnel from Hospital Melaka confirmed that the man had died. Physical inspections on the deceased also found no signs of criminal elements,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
Christopher said neighbours informed police that the victim, who lived alone, had not been seen leaving his house for the past four to five days before the unpleasant odour was noticed.
A post-mortem carried out at Hospital Melaka later determined that the cause of death was related to heart problems.
Police are currently attempting to trace and contact the victim’s next of kin.
