Azmin Demands Open Apology From Wong Siew Ki To Sultan Selangor

Date:

Selangor Perikatan Nasional (PN) has called on Seri Kembangan assemblyman Wong Siew Ki to issue an immediate open and unconditional apology to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and the people of Selangor over remarks and actions allegedly linked to public unease.

Selangor PN chairman Mohamed Azmin Ali said the Sultan’s reminder on the importance of appreciating the Rukun Negara principles and respecting the Constitutional Monarchy institution must be taken seriously by all parties, especially political leaders.

According to him, the royal decree should not be viewed as a routine reminder but rather a firm reprimand towards certain leaders who were allegedly seen as failing to uphold proper conduct and decorum within the nation’s constitutional framework.

He said the matter should not be taken lightly as it touches on the foundations of harmony and stability in both Selangor and the country.

In the same statement issued on Tuesday, Mohamed Azmin also urged the Selangor Menteri Besar, as head of the state administration, to take responsibility and firm action by referring the matter to the Selangor State Assembly Rights and Privileges Committee.

He said such action was necessary to ensure the Selangor State Legislative Assembly would not be perceived as practising double standards in matters involving discipline and respect for the Constitutional Monarchy institution.

“Freedom of speech must come with responsibility and should not be used to challenge the fundamental principles of nationhood that form the basis of national unity,” he said.

He added that all parties should return to the spirit of the Rukun Negara and uphold the Sultan’s decree as guidance in preserving harmony and stability within the state.

Earlier, reports stated that the Sultan of Selangor had suggested Wong Siew Ki and former Selangor exco member Ronnie Liu Tian Khiew attend Dataran Selangor once a week to better appreciate the principles of the Rukun Negara and understand the importance of respecting the royal institution and maintaining proper conduct.

The Sultan said the move was important to ensure all parties, particularly political leaders, fully understand the core values that underpin national unity and harmony.
