Tony Pua Stresses Constitutional Monarchy And Rule Of Law

Date:

All Malaysians must fully understand the Rukun Negara and the Federal Constitution in line with the constitutional monarchy system that forms the foundation of the country’s administration.

Former Damansara MP Tony Pua said Malaysia practises a constitutional monarchy, where the powers of the rulers differ slightly from state to state.

However, he said the rulers’ powers are generally limited to specific matters such as Malay customs, Islam, and constitutional roles including the appointment of Menteri Besar and consent for the dissolution of state legislative assemblies.

“Malaysians do not live in a system where rulers can issue binding decrees and legislate over all aspects of citizens’ lives,” he said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

The Tony Pua, who is also the DAP disciplinary committee chairman, added that the country instead has Parliament and state legislative assemblies made up of elected representatives responsible for making laws and decisions.

He said this is fully in line with the Rukun Negara, particularly the principles of loyalty to King and country, supremacy of the Constitution, and rule of law.

“Yes, I am loyal to the King and country and will uphold the rule of law under the Federal Constitution — not decrees,” he said.
