Actions by certain parties questioning the decree of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, are seen as contradicting the spirit of the Rukun Negara and the principles of constitutional monarchy that form the foundation of the country.
Selangor PAS Youth chief Mohamed Sukri Omar said it was strange that some parties speak about the “supremacy of the Constitution” and “rule of law”, yet are alleged to be disrespecting the role of the royal institution, which is also protected under the Constitution.
“They speak as if anyone defending the Sultan’s decree wants to turn Malaysia into a monarchy dictatorship.
“That is a weak argument, misleading, and deliberately diverted to cover the real issue,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
He was responding to comments by former Damansara MP Tony Pua, who had earlier said Malaysians must understand the Rukun Negara and Federal Constitution in line with the constitutional monarchy system.
Mohamed Sukri said the real issue arises when the Sultan of Selangor, as head of Islam in the state, expresses a position on religious sensitivity, social harmony, and state interests, yet some parties continue to question and politicise the matter publicly.
He said the principle of “Loyalty to King and Country” in the Rukun Negara should not only be recited at official events but practised in daily governance.
“Do not talk about the supremacy of the Constitution if respect for the constitutional monarchy is not upheld.
“Do not preach ‘rule of law’ if the role of the Ruler is only respected when cutting ribbons and attending ceremonies,” he added.
Mohamed Sukri also claimed that some parties want the royal institution to function merely as a symbolic body without influence on issues involving religion, state stability, and public harmony.
He said the monarchy is not merely a “rubber stamp” but a pillar of stability and unity for the people.
“If you truly respect the Constitution, then respect it in its entirety, not selectively for political gain,” he said.
Earlier, Tony Pua said Malaysia practises a constitutional monarchy system where royal powers vary slightly by state.
