‘Angel In The Sky’: Doctor-Turned-Singer Goes Viral For Saving Passenger During Flight To Fukuoka

Date:

A Hong Kong intensive care unit doctor has gone viral online after stepping forward to save a passenger who suddenly collapsed during a flight from Hong Kong to Fukuoka, Japan.

The incident recently gained attention on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu after passengers shared their experience onboard a Hong Kong Express flight on April 30.

According to online posts, a middle-aged male passenger suddenly lost consciousness during the flight, prompting the captain to make an emergency announcement asking whether any doctors were onboard.

Witnesses said a tall and handsome young man, believed to be around 1.85 metres in height, immediately stood up and assisted cabin crew in providing emergency medical treatment to the passenger.

Netizens later identified the man as Ryan Cheung, an ICU doctor at a Hong Kong public hospital who is also known locally as an independent singer and HYROX ambassador.

Passengers praised the doctor for remaining calm and professional throughout the emergency, while social media users quickly became fascinated by his multiple identities as a doctor, musician and fitness enthusiast.

Many netizens described him as the “ideal man” and “an angel”, praising not only his appearance but also his willingness to help during a life-threatening situation.

Some users commented that Ryan was “handsome, athletic, talented and kind-hearted”, while others criticised online users who focused solely on his looks instead of recognising his actions.

Ryan graduated from the University of Hong Kong medical faculty in 2018 and has reportedly worked in emergency medicine, anaesthesiology and cardiology before joining the intensive care unit.

In previous interviews, he shared that working in the ICU constantly reminds him of how fragile life can be.

“Working in ICU reminds me every day how vulnerable life is. It pushes me to make full use of every minute,” he once said.

Outside the hospital, Ryan is also active as an independent musician.

He reportedly started learning guitar at the age of 14 and was heavily influenced by American singer-songwriter John Mayer.

During the pandemic, Ryan experienced intense work pressure and a breakup, eventually taking a six-month break from work in 2023 to focus on songwriting and music production.

He described music as a form of emotional healing and self-expression.

Ryan also revealed that balancing medicine, music and fitness remains a constant challenge, often forcing him to sacrifice social activities to manage his demanding schedule.

Interestingly, some of his songs even incorporate medical terminology and reflections on life and mortality inspired by his ICU experiences.

Following the viral incident, Ryan responded briefly on Facebook, thanking netizens for the support and saying he hoped to continue spreading positivity, health awareness and music to more people.

His actions during the flight have since earned widespread admiration online, with many praising not only his professionalism but also his compassion in stepping forward during an emergency thousands of feet above the ground.
