Stop Reserving Parking Spaces, DBKL Tells Urban Residents

Date:

The practice of “choping” parking spaces in residential strata areas and People’s Housing Projects (PPR) should not become a norm in urban communities, says Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

DBKL said that parking shortages are indeed common in many residential areas due to the increasing number of vehicles.

However, it stressed that this situation cannot be used as an excuse for individuals to reserve parking spaces by placing cones, chairs, flower pots or other objects for personal use.

“In community living, especially in strata and PPR areas, residents must understand that facilities provided are meant to be shared for the benefit of all,” DBKL said in a Facebook post.

“However, the issue arises when some individuals use these difficulties as justification to ‘chop’ parking spaces.

“There are cases where cones, chairs, flower pots, water containers and even homemade signs are placed as if the parking bay belongs to them,” it added.

DBKL noted that in some PPR areas, multi-storey parking facilities have been provided to ease congestion and improve traffic flow within residential areas.

However, it said some residents still choose to park along roads, road shoulders or double-park in order to be closer to their homes or premises.

It added that selfish behaviour in the use of shared spaces can affect community harmony and lead to tension among neighbours.
