A Texas mother has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after her three-month-old son was found “starving and looking like a skeleton” in a hotel room filled with knives, swords, and drugs.
Skylynn Tuerk, 34, pleaded guilty to murder, injury to a child, child endangerment, and possession of methamphetamine following the death of Jacob Jeremiah Amon Harris—known locally as Baby JJ—at the New Road Inn in Waco on November 29, 2023. His three-year-old sister was also rescued from the unsafe room.
Police described the hotel room as “unclean and dangerous,” with cockroaches, raw meat left unrefrigerated, knives and swords within reach of the children, and methamphetamine along with a drug scale in a backpack. Court documents noted there was no baby formula for Jacob, with only juice boxes and fruit snacks found as food for the children.
McLennan County Judge Susan Kelly sentenced Tuerk to 40 years for murder and 40 years for child injury, to run concurrently. She will be eligible for parole after at least 20 years and has received credit for over 600 days already served in pretrial detention.
The case came to light after a third party alerted Child Protective Services, reporting that Baby JJ had not been gaining weight and that Tuerk appeared “nonchalant” about his condition. Meanwhile, the child’s father, Charles Devin Harris, 28, was reportedly playing video games while concerns were raised. Both parents were indicted in January 2024; Harris’s case is still pending.
Tuerk’s defense lawyer, Jonathan Sibley, said she was devastated by her child’s death and that her family continues to grieve while supporting her through incarceration.
State lawyer Tara Avants noted that Tuerk “accepted responsibility and received a sentence in the upper end of the punishment range,” emphasizing the “horrific and irresponsible nature” of her actions left no room for a lighter sentence.
