Thailand Launches New Digital Immigration App For Faster Airport Clearance

Date:

Thailand has introduced a new digital immigration system aimed at speeding up airport arrivals for international travellers while maintaining strict border security measures.

The Thailand Immigration Management System (THIM), launched by the country’s Immigration Bureau in collaboration with Digital Identity Co Ltd, allows visitors to complete their arrival registration digitally before landing in the country.

The cloud-based mobile application, unveiled during the AWS Summit 2026 in Bangkok, is available on both Apple and Android platforms and is designed to reduce immigration registration time to just one to two minutes for returning travellers.

According to Thai immigration officials, the system was developed to handle the country’s growing number of foreign arrivals, which currently stands at around 30 million visitors annually.

Under the new process, travellers only need to register their personal details once using AI-powered passport scanning technology capable of reading passport chips, machine-readable zones and biometric information.

For future trips, users only need to update several travel-related fields instead of repeating the full registration process.

Deputy commissioner of Thailand’s Immigration Bureau, Pol Maj Gen Pratya Prasarnsuk, said the initiative was introduced to modernise border procedures without compromising national security.

Officials stressed that all traveller data would remain stored within Thailand through locally hosted cloud infrastructure in compliance with Thai laws on personal data protection.

Beyond arrival registration, authorities also plan to expand THIM into a wider digital immigration platform for foreign residents and long-term visitors.

Upcoming features are expected to include visa extension applications, appointment bookings, address reporting and digital certification services, reducing the need for physical visits to immigration offices.

Thailand is also studying plans to expand automated passport gate clearance to more foreign travellers in phases, following systems already available for Thai citizens and selected nationalities.

The THIM application currently supports English, Russian, Japanese and Chinese languages, with plans to increase support to 15 languages by the end of the year.
