Blue Origin New Glenn Rocket Explodes During Ground Test In Major Setback For Bezos Space Venture

Date:

Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket suffered a major setback after it exploded during a ground-based hot-fire test on Thursday, marking a significant disruption for Jeff Bezos’ space company as it continues its efforts to compete with Elon Musk’s SpaceX in the commercial space race.

Footage shared by NASASpaceflight, a YouTube channel that livestreams rocket activity from Florida, showed the vehicle igniting on the launchpad at around 9pm ET (0200 GMT) before erupting into a large fireball. The explosion sent flames and thick smoke high into the sky, highlighting the risks involved in heavy-lift rocket development.

General industry observers note that such incidents, often referred to as “anomalies” by aerospace companies, are not uncommon during early-stage rocket testing. However, they underline the immense technical challenges faced by private space firms attempting to develop reusable launch systems capable of deep-space missions.

Blue Origin confirmed the incident in a statement on social media platform X, saying it had experienced an anomaly during the hot-fire test and that all personnel were accounted for. The company added that further updates would be provided once a full investigation had been carried out.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency was aware of the incident and stressed that spaceflight development remains highly complex and unforgiving. He added that NASA would work with partners to assess the impact of the failure on upcoming missions, including its Artemis programme and plans for lunar infrastructure.

The setback comes shortly after NASA awarded Blue Origin a US$188 million contract to deliver lunar rovers to the Moon using its uncrewed cargo lander, as part of broader Artemis exploration efforts. The contract had been seen as a key milestone in the company’s push to establish itself as a major player in NASA’s long-term space strategy.

Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos acknowledged the failure, stating that it was still too early to determine the root cause. He said the company would rebuild and continue development, emphasising that setbacks are part of advancing space technology.

The incident also reignites the ongoing rivalry between Blue Origin and SpaceX, with both companies competing to develop next-generation lunar and deep-space systems. SpaceX chief Elon Musk responded to footage of the explosion by remarking that “rockets are hard,” reflecting the technical difficulty shared across the industry.

Despite the failure, Blue Origin has continued work on its New Glenn programme, which is designed as a 29-storey reusable rocket intended to carry heavy payloads into orbit. The system is also expected to support Amazon’s satellite internet project, which aims to compete with SpaceX’s Starlink network.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said it was aware of the incident but noted that it did not affect air traffic operations. Investigations into the cause of the explosion are expected to determine whether the programme’s upcoming launch schedule will face further delays.
