An Indonesian construction worker was killed after being crushed by a collapsed concrete structure while carrying out construction work at a premises along Jalan Guar Perahu Indah on Friday.
The Penang Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Movement Centre (PGO) identified the victim as 27-year-old Marzuki.
In a statement, the department said it received an emergency call regarding the incident at 3.55pm, prompting the deployment of five firefighters and a fire engine from the Penanti Fire and Rescue Station to the scene.
Authorities said the victim had already been pulled from the rubble by members of the public before the rescue team arrived.
When firefighters reached the location, the victim was found unconscious and was subsequently moved to a safe area by the rescue team.
Despite efforts to assist him, medical personnel from the Health Ministry confirmed his death at the scene.
Workplace accidents remain a serious concern in the construction sector, with authorities continuing to emphasise the importance of strict safety compliance at project sites.
The victim’s body was later handed over to police for further action, while the operation concluded at 5.05pm.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
