A 21-year-old woman in Japan has died after reportedly leaning her head out of a moving car window and colliding with the wall of an underpass, in a tragic incident that has shocked the local community.
The fatal accident occurred on the morning of May 28 in Gifu Prefecture. Emergency services were alerted at around 8.30am after the woman, identified as Kokoa Matsubara, was found collapsed and unconscious in a car park in Kasamatsu Town.
Police officers arriving at the scene discovered she had suffered severe head injuries. She was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment but succumbed to her injuries approximately seven hours later.
According to investigators, Matsubara had been travelling in the front passenger seat of a vehicle driven by a friend when the incident occurred. Authorities believe she had extended her head outside the car window shortly before the vehicle entered a narrow underpass.
Her head reportedly struck the side wall of the structure with significant force, causing catastrophic injuries. Despite efforts by medical staff, she could not be saved.
Adding to the tragedy, the victim’s young child was reportedly seated in the rear of the vehicle at the time of the accident. Fortunately, the child escaped without injury.
Police later conducted tests on the driver, identified as Nono Minamino, and allegedly found her blood alcohol level exceeded the legal limit. She was arrested on suspicion of violating Japan’s road traffic laws by driving under the influence of alcohol.
Reports indicate the driver has admitted to drink-driving. Investigators are now examining the full circumstances surrounding the incident and whether additional charges may be brought.
Authorities are considering pursuing more serious offences, including dangerous driving resulting in death, as they continue to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the fatal collision.
The case has reignited discussion about road safety and the dangers of both impaired driving and unsafe behaviour by passengers inside moving vehicles.
