E-Scooter Use On Roadway Triggers Online Backlash And Safety Concerns

Date:

A video of a woman allegedly riding an e-scooter along a bridge walkway in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur has gone viral, drawing public criticism and sparking debate online.

The footage, shared on Threads by user Alfred Lim, shows the woman travelling on the left side of the road on an e-scooter without wearing a helmet.

In his caption, the uploader warned the rider, writing: “Hello aunty, this one cannot go up the bridge highway,” drawing further attention to the incident.

In a broader context, the growing popularity of personal mobility devices such as e-scooters has also raised safety concerns, particularly regarding their use on roads and highways where regulations may not be clearly understood by all users.

The post quickly attracted mixed reactions from social media users, with many criticising the woman’s actions and questioning road safety compliance.

Some commenters suggested that the rider may not be a local, while others expressed frustration over the inconvenience such behaviour could cause to other road users.

Others pointed out that e-scooters are typically used in controlled environments such as parks or short-distance areas, and are not suitable for highway or bridge traffic.

There were also calls for authorities to take stricter action, including seizing e-scooters used in violation of traffic rules or without proper licensing requirements.

The incident has since added to ongoing discussions about the regulation and enforcement of e-scooter usage in urban areas.
