Football Legend Kevin Keegan Reveals Stage Four Cancer Diagnosis

Date:

Former England captain and manager Kevin Keegan has revealed he is battling stage four cancer, sharing the news during an emotional public appearance in Newcastle.

The 75-year-old football icon disclosed the diagnosis while speaking at a live event at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House, where he received a standing ovation from supporters.

Keegan’s family first revealed in January that he was undergoing medical treatment after doctors carried out further investigations into persistent abdominal symptoms.

Speaking candidly about his health battle, Keegan explained that the cancer was discovered unexpectedly following scans related to injuries sustained in a car accident.

“I was involved in a car accident and had to undergo surgery. During the scans, doctors found that I had cancer,” he told the audience.

The former football star said he was referred to a specialist who informed him that he was facing stage four cancer, the most advanced stage of the disease, where cancer has spread to other parts of the body.

Keegan recalled a light-hearted exchange with his doctor, who told him a new treatment offered a “tremendous strike rate”.

“When I asked what the strike rate was, he said 33 per cent. I thought it would be 80 or 90 per cent,” Keegan joked.

“I’m still here at the moment.”

The revelation has prompted an outpouring of support from across the football community, with fans, former teammates and clubs rallying behind one of English football’s most beloved figures.

During a glittering playing career, Keegan represented clubs including Liverpool FC, Hamburger SV, Southampton FC and Newcastle United FC. He was twice crowned European Footballer of the Year and remains one of the most celebrated players of his generation.

His success continued in management, where he led Newcastle United, Fulham, England and Manchester City, becoming particularly famous for Newcastle’s thrilling “Entertainers” side that challenged for the Premier League title in the mid-1990s.

Keegan remains a revered figure among Newcastle supporters. Current Newcastle manager Eddie Howe previously revealed that he sought Keegan’s advice after taking charge of the club in 2021.

Despite his legendary status on Tyneside, Keegan said he has never been interested in having a statue erected in his honour outside St James’ Park.

“You’ll have to wait until I die for that,” he said. “My statue is the way you receive me.”

In a statement, Newcastle United FC expressed its unwavering support for the club legend and his family.

“Kevin holds a unique and cherished place in the history of Newcastle United and in the hearts of our supporters,” the club said.

“Everyone at the club is behind Kevin and sends strength and best wishes to him and his family for the journey ahead.”

As one of the most influential figures in English football history, Keegan’s announcement has resonated deeply throughout the sport, with fans hoping the beloved football icon can continue his fight against the disease.
