A 57-year-old woman suffered severe injuries, including a severed left leg, after the sport utility vehicle (SUV) she was travelling in was involved in an accident along the East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2) near the Paka Rest and Service Area on Friday evening.
The incident occurred at Kilometer 341.5 of the highway while the vehicle, a Proton X70, was travelling from Kuala Terengganu to Kuantan with five occupants on board.
Operations commander Senior Fire Officer II Nor Hazamullah Abdullah said the Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 5.41pm before dispatching a team of seven firefighters and a fire engine to the scene.
Firefighters successfully extricated the injured woman from the wreckage, while the severed limb was later recovered from inside the vehicle and handed over to police and medical personnel for further action.
The victim, along with four other passengers who sustained injuries in the crash, was rushed to Hospital Dungun for treatment.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident, which resulted in the SUV veering off the road.
