DAP Eyes 17 Johor Seats In Upcoming State Election, Says Teo Nie Ching

Date:

DAP has expressed its intention to contest 17 seats in the Johor State Legislative Assembly (DUN) under the Pakatan Harapan (PH) banner in the upcoming state election, up from 14 seats contested in the previous polls.

Johor DAP chief Teo Nie Ching said, however, that the proposal is not finalised and remains subject to ongoing seat negotiations among PH component parties.

She said the seat talks are now in the final stage, with only one or two constituencies still unresolved.

Teo said the party’s preparations are currently focused on the 17 seats it intends to contest, although no agreement has been officially signed yet.

She added that the negotiations are expected to be concluded within one to two weeks, as there are not many disputes involving DAP.

According to her, several key factors are being considered in the seat distribution, including party machinery strength, candidate suitability and winnability in each constituency.

Teo also said efforts are being made to ensure a balanced allocation of seats among coalition parties, noting that Johor has a total of 56 DUN seats.

On potential candidates, she confirmed that the list will include new faces, including young candidates and women, although the final proportion has yet to be determined.

She said the candidate list must be approved by the party’s Five-Man Committee formed by the DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC), meaning the final decision does not rest at the state level.

Teo also noted that the candidate selection process is still ongoing, including for the Skudai seat following the announcement of the incumbent ADUN’s retirement.

In the 2022 Johor state election, Pakatan Harapan won 12 seats, with DAP securing 10, while PKR and Amanah each won one seat.

Johor DUN was dissolved on June 1 to pave the way for the upcoming state election, with the Election Commission required to hold the polls within 60 days.
