Vigilante Video Sparks Outrage After Men Detain Rohingya Man And Confiscating His Water

Date:

A viral video circulating on social media has triggered widespread outrage after a group of men were seen stopping, searching and intimidating a Rohingya man on a public street despite having no apparent law enforcement authority.

The footage, which has been widely shared on Threads, shows the man walking alone while carrying two large bottles of drinking water when he was approached and confronted by several men.

In the video, one of the men, who appeared to have an electronic cigarette hanging around his neck, questioned the Rohingya man about where he had obtained the water before allegedly telling him that it belonged to Malaysians.

“This is Malaysian water. You cannot take it, understand?” the man was heard saying.

Moments later, the group allegedly confiscated the two bottles of water and claimed they were being “seized”, despite having no visible authority to do so.

The situation escalated further when one of the men appeared to search the Rohingya individual while others restrained his arms behind his back and threatened to take him to a police station.

Throughout the encounter, the Rohingya man remained calm and did not appear to resist.

The actions of the group have sparked intense debate online, with many social media users condemning what they described as vigilante behaviour and a public humiliation of an individual who had not been shown committing any offence.

Several users pointed out that only law enforcement officers have the legal authority to conduct searches, detentions or confiscate personal belongings, questioning the legality of the group’s actions.

Others argued that even if concerns existed regarding immigration or documentation issues, such matters should be handled by the relevant authorities rather than members of the public taking matters into their own hands.

The incident has also reignited broader discussions about growing anti-Rohingya sentiment in Malaysia and concerns that frustration over immigration issues could encourage acts of vigilantism.

Many commenters stressed that enforcement of immigration laws should remain the responsibility of government agencies and warned that self-appointed actions by civilians risk undermining the rule of law and damaging the country’s image.

“Leave it to the authorities to take action according to the law,” one social media user wrote. “Water is a basic necessity, and if he paid for it himself, nobody has the right to take it away.”

The authenticity of the video and whether any official police report has been lodged in connection with the incident have yet to be confirmed.

The video continues to draw strong reactions online, with calls for authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
