Police Open Two Probe Papers Over Elderly Care Centre Injury Allegations

Date:

Police have opened two investigation papers following allegations involving injuries sustained by two elderly residents at a care centre in Kuala Muda, Kedah.

Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said authorities received two separate police reports from the families of the elderly victims, prompting investigations under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

He said one of the investigation papers has already been referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor, while the other remains under active investigation as officers continue gathering statements and evidence to determine the actual circumstances of the incident.

Police confirmed that efforts are ongoing to piece together the sequence of events, including collecting testimonies from relevant individuals linked to the care facility.

The case came to light after the family of a 76-year-old woman alleged that she was admitted to the centre in December last year due to dementia.

According to the family, they were informed a day after admission that she had fallen from her bed, but later claimed to have observed unexplained bruises and injuries on her body during visits.

The family also alleged that they had previously seen the victim’s hands and legs being tied to a metal bed frame during one of their visits.

A second elderly resident, a 69-year-old man who has been staying at the same facility since September 2024, is also believed to have suffered similar injuries.

Meanwhile, the care centre operator has denied all allegations of abuse, stating that any injuries sustained by residents would be immediately communicated to family members.

The operator also maintained that any restraint measures, including tying of residents, were only carried out for safety purposes and with prior consent from families.

Police said the investigation is ongoing as they work to verify all claims and ensure proper legal action is taken based on findings.
