Two police officers from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (BSJN) of the Selama District Police Headquarters were seriously injured after being attacked by a suspected drug addict armed with a knife in Kampung Sungai Jernih, Ijok, Selama, Perak, yesterday.
The incident, which occurred around 12pm, left a constable with severe facial injuries while a sergeant sustained injuries to the head, arms and abdomen after the suspect allegedly turned aggressive during an arrest attempt.
A source said the officers had earlier received intelligence regarding the presence of a man suspected of drug abuse at a hut in the village area.
Following the tip-off, the two officers were deployed to monitor the location before moving in to detain the suspect, who is believed to be in his 30s.
However, upon approaching the hut, the suspect reportedly fled after realising the presence of police officers.
One of the officers managed to restrain him, but a struggle ensued, during which the suspect allegedly pulled out a small knife and launched a violent attack.
The constable suffered a long slash wound from the forehead down to the cheek, in addition to injuries on his right arm.
The sergeant who rushed to assist his colleague was also struck by the blade, sustaining injuries to the head, arm and upper abdomen.
After attacking both officers, the suspect fled into a nearby forested area.
Both injured officers were later treated at the Emergency Unit of Selama Hospital.
Police have since launched a manhunt operation, including roadblocks and closures of all entry and exit points in the area.
