A fire broke out at Rh Udin longhouse in Sungai Sengan today, destroying one unit completely while two neighbouring units sustained partial damage.
According to the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Sibu Zone 4 chief Andy Alie, emergency services received a distress call at 10.52am before firefighters from Sibu Jaya and Sungai Merah stations were dispatched to the scene.
The first team arrived at 11.10am and found that the blaze involved the second unit of an eight-door longhouse.
The affected unit was destroyed 100 per cent, while the third unit suffered about 50 per cent damage and the first unit approximately 10 per cent damage.
Firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading further, saving five other units in the longhouse through swift action.
A total of 19 residents were involved in the incident, but no injuries or fatalities were reported.
The operation was carried out using fire hoses and support lines to contain the blaze, which was brought under control at 11.24am.
Andy said firefighters faced challenges due to the lack of nearby fire hydrants and open water sources, as well as poor communication coverage in the area.
Despite the difficulties, coordinated efforts by all responding agencies ensured the fire was fully extinguished, with operations concluding at 12.30pm after confirming the area was safe.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire and estimating the total losses.
