Brazil star Neymar has finally returned to international football after a 981-day absence, breaking down in tears at the end of an emotional night following Brazil’s 3-0 victory over Scotland in Group C of the World Cup.
The 34-year-old forward came off the bench in the 76th minute at the Miami Stadium, where he was greeted by loud cheers from Brazilian supporters. However, the emotional weight of his return became clear at the final whistle as he was seen in tears on the pitch.
The moment turned even more uplifting shortly after, when Neymar was reunited with his wife and children pitch-side, transforming his emotional reaction into a joyful family celebration.
Brazil sealed top spot in the group with goals from Vinicius Junior, who scored twice in the first half, and Matheus Cunha, who added a third after the break.
Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti said Neymar fully deserved his return to the pitch, highlighting his commitment in training.
“I think he deserved to play. He trained well and was very serious. With his quality, he can help the team,” said Ancelotti.
Vinicius Junior also praised Neymar’s presence, saying it had a positive impact on the squad.
“The whole team played well together. Neymar’s presence brought many positive things for us,” he said.
Neymar had been sidelined for over a month due to a calf injury and was still recovering from an ACL injury sustained in 2023.
The Brazilian forward remains his country’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals in 129 international appearances and has featured in three previous World Cups.
