AKPS To Crack Down On Abuse Of Sick Leave, Says Chief

Date:

The Director-General of the Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, has stressed that officers and personnel must uphold strong discipline and avoid the culture of being “sulky” or providing questionable sick leave excuses when reprimanded.

He said all personnel joining AKPS must step out of their comfort zones and embrace a new working culture within the enforcement agency.

According to him, the “change of command” culture will form the backbone of AKPS operations moving forward.

“Discipline means that when you are reprimanded, you do not sulk and the next day claim to be sick or produce questionable medical certificates.

“This culture I will put an end to through disciplinary action. Any private clinic issuing invalid sick leave certificates will be reported to the police,” he said during the AKPS Monthly Assembly here on Wednesday.

He said such undisciplined practices could weaken enforcement agencies and undermine operational effectiveness in the field.

Mohd Shuhaily added that AKPS requires full commitment from all personnel in restoring the dignity and integrity of frontline officers at the country’s entry points.

“In essence, we must restore public trust in carrying out this responsibility with a new face and a new spirit,” he said.

The July 2026 AKPS Monthly Assembly served as a platform for senior leadership to communicate strategic direction while strengthening organisational unity and promoting a culture of integrity, efficiency, and professionalism.

The event also carried significance as it coincided with the official implementation of the AKPS Service Scheme, which came into force on July 1, 2026, and marked one year of Mohd Shuhaily’s leadership since July 1, 2025.

In other developments, he revealed that total enforcement seizures, confiscations, and handovers from January to May this year reached RM140.863 million, nearly double the RM82.1 million recorded throughout 2025.

He said 432 containers of e-waste, weighing more than 5,803 tonnes, were successfully intercepted from being illegally imported or exported.

Through coordinated efforts under the Whole of Government approach, 122 e-waste containers were returned to their countries of origin in line with the Basel Convention requirements.
