NFCC Confirms Azam Baki Remains Advisory Board Member Until 2027

Date:

The National Financial Crime Prevention Centre (NFCC) has confirmed that Tan Sri Azam Baki remains a legitimate member of its Advisory Board despite no longer serving as the Chief Commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

In a statement on Friday, NFCC Director-General Datuk Seri Shamshun Baharin Mohd Jamil clarified that Azam’s appointment to the Advisory Board took effect on 20 September 2024 and will remain valid for a three-year term until 19 September 2027.

According to Shamshun Baharin, Azam was appointed in his personal capacity with the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, meaning his membership is independent of his former position as MACC chief.

“As such, his membership on the NFCC Advisory Board is not tied to the office of the MACC Chief Commissioner and will remain effective until the end of his appointment, unless terminated earlier by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said.

The clarification comes after Azam’s attendance at an NFCC Advisory Board meeting on 30 June was questioned by several parties following the end of his tenure at the MACC.

Shamshun Baharin stressed that Azam’s participation in the meeting fully complied with the provisions of Act 822, as he remains a legally appointed member of the advisory board.

Azam stepped down as MACC Chief Commissioner on 12 May after serving as the head of Malaysia’s anti-corruption agency for six years. He was subsequently succeeded by Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Aman.

The NFCC said its statement was intended to clarify the legal status of Azam’s appointment and address public questions regarding his continued involvement in the advisory board’s proceedings.
