Ronaldo’s World Cup Dream Ends As Spain Strike Late To Dump Portugal Out

Date:

Cristiano Ronaldo’s quest for another FIFA World Cup title came to a heartbreaking end after Portugal suffered a dramatic 1-0 defeat to Spain in their Round of 16 clash at the Dallas Stadium in the early hours of Tuesday.

With the contest seemingly destined for extra time, substitute Mikel Merino emerged as Spain’s hero by converting a pinpoint pass from Ferran Torres in the first minute of stoppage time, sealing a last-gasp victory for La Roja.

The dramatic win not only booked Spain’s place in the quarter-finals but also saw them become the first team in FIFA World Cup history to record six consecutive matches without conceding a single goal. Their disciplined defence and clinical organisation once again proved decisive on the biggest stage.

Spain controlled much of the possession through the creativity of Mikel Oyarzabal, Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal, but Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa produced a string of impressive saves to keep the score level for almost the entire match.

Portugal created chances of their own through Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva, only to be frustrated by Spain’s resilient backline and an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Unai Simón, who denied every attempt that came his way.

Just as Portugal appeared ready to battle through extra time, Merino timed his run to perfection before calmly beating Costa to break the deadlock, sparking wild celebrations among the Spanish supporters.

Portugal pushed desperately for a late equaliser, but Bernardo Silva’s header failed to find the target, confirming Spain’s narrow victory and ending Portugal’s campaign.

The result echoed Spain’s famous 1-0 triumph over Portugal in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Round of 16—a tournament that ultimately saw Spain lift the World Cup trophy for the first time.

For Ronaldo, the defeat marked the final FIFA World Cup appearance of his legendary international career.
