At home, fashion in the Jolie household is all about one simple rule: be yourself. Angelina Jolie, the star of Mr. & Mrs. Smith and the upcoming fashion drama Couture, shared with E! News that her six children—Maddox, 24; Pax, 21; Zahara, 20; Shiloh, 19; and twins Knox and Vivienne, 17—play an unexpected role in her style decisions.
“My house is very much ‘to each their own,’” Jolie said during the world premiere of Couture at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. “We’re very democratic. Everybody does their own thing. As long as you’re being you, we’re good. If you’re dressing up to impress someone else, we’d probably call you out. But if it’s genuinely you, be you!”
While Jolie encourages her kids’ individuality, her character in Couture—an American filmmaker navigating Paris Fashion Week—takes a more pared-back approach. “She wears the same big black jacket through the entire movie,” Jolie joked. “I think I’m the only one not dressed in fashion. My character comes from a different world—horror movies, directing, life and death—so she’s not obsessed with trends.”
Despite their different approaches to clothing, Jolie found a deeper connection with the story. “There’s a softness to this film—a connection between women—that’s unlike anything I’ve done before,” she said. “It’s very female-centric, united by women from all over the world. We all have different experiences, but in the end, we’re more similar than we are different.”
This project marks a new chapter for Jolie, who returned to Hollywood after a hiatus spent healing from a difficult divorce. “I went very dark for reasons I’d rather not explain,” she told Vanity Fair last December. “Your light’s dim. But now, I feel like I’m stepping into a new season.”
Her children, who have grown more independent, have even supported her on set. “Maddox and Pax were production assistants on Maria, and it’s wonderful to see them stepping into their own lives,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “They’re old enough to join me at work, which allows me to focus on my career while still being with them. It’s exciting to see them come into their own every day.”
