Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Borneo Airways’ fixed RM375 one-way fare between Kuching and Kuala Lumpur is aimed at easing the financial burden on travellers rather than generating profits.
He said the state-owned airline was established to provide affordable and stable airfares for Sarawakians, especially those working, studying or living in Peninsular Malaysia who return home during festive seasons.
According to Abang Johari, airfares between Kuala Lumpur and Kuching often surge during major celebrations such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Gawai Dayak, with one-way tickets sometimes reaching between RM700 and RM800 per person. He noted that the cost becomes even more burdensome for families travelling together. He stressed that Borneo Airways is intended to give Sarawakians a more reliable and affordable travel option instead of operating solely for commercial profit.
“Borneo Airways is not here to make huge profits. It is here to provide a service and ensure people remain connected,” he said.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the First Batang Lupar Bridge, Abang Johari explained that the RM375 fare was determined after careful cost calculations to help stabilise ticket prices and prevent excessive fare increases during peak travel periods.
He added that the Sarawak government would consider lowering fares further in the future if conditions allow, in order to better serve the needs of the people.
Abang Johari also pledged that as long as he remains Sarawak Premier, Borneo Airways’ pricing policy will continue to prioritise the interests of the people.
He said improved air connectivity would not only benefit Sarawakians but also strengthen the state’s economy by attracting more visitors, including Indonesians seeking medical treatment in Kuching, which would in turn boost Sarawak’s healthcare, tourism and service sectors.
