High Voter Enthusiasm Could Push Johor Poll Turnout To 70 Per Cent, Says EC

Date:

The Election Commission (EC) is expecting voter turnout for the Johor State Election (PRN) tomorrow to reach around 70 per cent, driven by strong public interest in participating in the democratic process.

EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the projection was based on the response seen throughout the campaigning period, with many voters showing enthusiasm and awareness towards fulfilling their responsibilities.

He said the continuous campaign activities by contesting parties had contributed to increased public engagement, adding that the level of interest among voters appeared higher compared with previous elections.

“We can see there is a trend of stronger interest in voting this time. With the ongoing campaigns, the EC expects turnout to reach around 70 per cent,” he told reporters after inspecting ballot box preparation at Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim in Pontian and Dewan Serbaguna Permas, Kukup.

Ramlan added that besides the active campaigning period, greater public understanding of the importance of elections had also played a role in encouraging more people to cast their votes.

He said approximately 2.7 million registered voters are eligible to participate in the Johor polls, involving 1,076 polling centres and 4,889 voting streams across the state.

Voting will begin at 8am, with closing times varying depending on the location. Most polling centres are expected to close at 6pm, while several remote areas will end voting earlier due to logistical considerations.

Ramlan explained that the earliest polling station to close would be at Pulau Besar, Mersing, at 11am, followed by two locations — Pulau Aur and Pulau Pemanggil — which will close at noon. Meanwhile, 17 polling centres will close at 2pm, 42 centres at 4pm, and 1,114 centres at 6pm.

A total of 43,036 election personnel have been deployed to manage the voting process, while 24,677 postal ballot papers have been issued and must be returned before 6pm tomorrow.

The EC also assured that all logistical arrangements, including the transportation of ballot boxes from island areas, have been carefully planned with contingency measures in place. Cooperation with the police and Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) has also been prepared to handle any unexpected situations during polling day.
