Choose Unity Over Division, PM Anwar Tells Johor Voters

Date:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Malaysians to reject racial politics and make wise decisions at the ballot box, saying the country’s future depends on leaders who promote unity, integrity and justice.

Speaking during a youth programme in support of Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for Gambir, Mohd Nor Mohd Yusof, ahead of polling day, Anwar reminded voters not to be influenced by attempts to divide society along racial lines.

The Prime Minister reflected on his childhood experiences growing up in a multiracial community, saying Malaysians of different backgrounds once lived together harmoniously without allowing race to become a barrier.

“I grew up with Malay, Chinese and Indian friends. We did not view one another through the lens of race,” he said during the programme on Friday.

Anwar also said racial division goes against the values taught in Islam, referring to the story of Bilal ibn Rabah, a close companion of Prophet Muhammad who was of African descent and had experienced slavery.

He stressed that Prophet Muhammad rejected discrimination based on race and skin colour, highlighting that Islam promotes equality, dignity and respect among all people.

Addressing young Malaysians, Anwar encouraged them to focus on education, embrace new technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and digital innovation, while maintaining strong moral principles.

“We must reach for the skies, but keep our feet firmly on the ground,” he said, while reminding youths to appreciate their parents and value family bonds.

Before concluding his speech, Anwar called on eligible voters to exercise their democratic responsibility and make informed choices during the Johor state election.

The official campaign period for the Johor state election ended at midnight on Friday, with voters set to decide the outcome for all 56 state seats on Saturday.
