25 Crew Saved After Fishing Vessel 80% Destroyed by Fire Near Alep Platform

Date:

Twenty-five crew members were rescued after the boat they were on caught fire approximately 3.5 nautical miles from the Alep Platform in the waters off Pantai Remis last night.

Acting Deputy Director of Operations for the Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Shazlean Mohd Hanafiah, said the emergency call was received at 11:06 p.m., prompting teams from the Pantai Remis Fire and Rescue Station to rush to the scene.

“The incident involved a class C trawl fishing boat, which was 80% destroyed by fire, located about 3.5 nautical miles from the nearby platform. Twenty-five crew members jumped into the sea and were rescued by nearby fishermen’s boats before being taken to the Alep Platform,” he said in a statement today.

Shazlean added that after discussions with the boat owner, the vessel, which had a diesel capacity of 10,000 liters, was prepared to be deliberately sunk and was being towed further out to sea by nearby fishermen’s boats.

“The firefighting operation continued at the owner’s request as the wreck needed to be preserved. Officers used two 200-foot water jets sourced from open water and fire pumps to fully extinguish the flames,” he said.
