Two men hired by loan sharks have been sentenced to 18 months in prison and fined RM20,000 each after pleading guilty to harassing and threatening borrowers in separate incidents last March and April.
The accused, Khairul Helmy Abd Karim, 39, and Mohamad Irwan Abdul Halim, 43, admitted to the charges after they were read before Magistrate Noor Farah Hazwani Osman.
For the first charge, both men were accused of acting with common intention to intimidate a man by splashing red paint on his car at Taman Sri Putra at about 3.30am on March 14.
The second charge involved another victim, where the accused allegedly splashed yellow paint on a Naza Forte car and the gate of a house at Taman Berjaya at about 5.30am on April 21.
The charges were brought under Section 29(B)(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
The offence carries a fine of between RM10,000 and RM50,000, imprisonment of up to two years, or both upon conviction.
The court sentenced each accused to eight months in prison and a RM10,000 fine for the first charge. They will face an additional three months’ imprisonment if they fail to pay the fine.
For the second charge, both men were sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment and fined RM10,000 each, with a further four-month jail term imposed if the fine is not paid.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Noor Hazwani Md Noor led the prosecution, while the two accused were represented by Nur Farahin Saad from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK).
